MY ANTICPATED MOVIE RELEASES: OCTOBER

Is it just me or has this past summer of films been extremely disappointing? Between revivals of movie franchises that failed to deliver and the usual barrage of Marvel offerings there was nothing that I really got excited about over the summer. Summer is the time for blockbusters and child friendly flicks so I’m looking forward to the Autumn/Winter releases.  As the seasons change; tones of films darken, less family friendly but rich stories, critically acclaimed performances and awards season buzz. Over the next few months I have decided to split these ‘Anticipated Movies...’ posts in to monthly posts, each one discussing what films have caught my eye and which I’ll be heading to the cinema for during the next 4 weeks. These are one of my favourite posts to write and after an underwhelming summer there are too many potentially great cinema offerings to narrow it down to only one per month.

Sicario
UK Release Date: 08/10/15

‘Sicario’ follows an idealistic FBI agent (Emily Blunt) after she is enlisted by an elected government task force to increase the war on drugs at the border between the U.S and Mexico. I will admit that my anticipation has mainly come from the glowing reviews that ‘Sicario’ has already received. It was reading about it online after it appeared at Cannes Film Festival that originally brought it to my attention.  From ‘Prisoners’ director Denis Villeneuve, ‘Sicario’ seems to have the same break-neck pace that ’Prisoners’ did. I would describe ‘Prisoners’ in one word, intense. Throughout its 2 and half hour run time you don’t know who to trust, the plot demands that you do not look away. Trailers for ‘Sicario’ present a matching cinema experience.

Crimson Peak
UK Release Date: 16/10/15

With October comes Halloween and with Halloween comes a tidal wave of Horror movie releases. Let’s face it, horror is not the most esteemed genre. It is definitely not my favourite, too often stories (and scares) get lost behind gratuitous violence, gore and bad acting. However from the trailers I have seen, 'Crimson Peak' looks truly terrifying, atmospheric and smart.
Guillermo Del Toro is returning to his Horror roots and giving us a good old fashioned ghost story. Boasting a cast that includes Jessica Chastain, Mia Wasikowska, Tom Hiddleston and Charlie Hunman I am very excited to see if Crimson Peak will live up to the hype it has already received pre-release.

Spectre
UK Release Date: 26/10/15

In usual Bond style, there has been very little information released about this film. With only a two minute trailer and a handful of stills we really are left to draw our own conclusions on what 'Spectre' is about. The trailers seem to present a film that follows the same tone of 'Skyfall' but with the style and large scale action that we loved in ‘Casino Royale’. A Bond film is only as good as its villain. The main reason I was such a big fan of ‘Skyfall’ was because of Javier Bardem’s spine chilling ‘Silva’. If his role as ‘Colonel Hans Landa’ in ‘Inglorious Bastards’ taught us anything, Christoph Waltz can play the villain.  In possibly his penultimate outing as James Bond, Daniel Craig will be bringing his signature edge to the 007 and after the exit of Judi Dench, Ralph Fiennes as ‘M’ will bring something new to the already huge franchise.

Honorable Mentions: Macbeth, The Walk and Suffragette

What films will you be heading to the cinema for this month?
